When it comes to getting your message out, email is still an incredibly powerful tool. Despite how useful a platform email proves to be, many people don’t take the time to learn how to have a successful email marketing campaign; they end up wasting time, money, and resources for people to not take the desired action — if they open the email at all.

You’re competing against thousands of other companies per day to grab the attention of your audience(s) and they’re more likely to make an email as spam, or shoot it straight to their trash, than read each and every one. So where exactly do things go wrong for companies?

No clear and simple goal for the email

A lot of emails wind up cluttered with irrelevant information; your customers aren’t sitting down to read a marketing novel from you, they’re scrolling through their emails and need to see important information immediately. Don’t swing the pendulum too far the other way, though; too little information and images will leave your customers confused and annoyed. Which leads into our next point.

Lacking a call to action

Be direct. Make your reader check out your new product, read your new blog, watch your new video, or grab deals during your sale before they’re gone. Use strong verbs to engage your reader and make them feel like they’re a part of your inner circle – you want them to feel as if they’d be foolish to ignore your message. But before they even get to the call to action, you have to grab their attention in their inbox.

Poor subject lines

This is usually one of the biggest killers of email campaigns; you need attention grabbing, exciting, and enticing copy in 40 characters— not exactly an easy feat. Some options to make your subject lines stand out include:

  • Having the amount of money your customer will save front loaded (put at the beginning of the subject line) can up your odds of the email being opened. You can also use the percentage off a particular product as an opening.
  • Put a call to action right in the subject line — get them to act immediately.
  • Add an air of mystery, or minor concern. Are you customers making mistakes your product can solve? Can you use this to your advantage in a few short words? The answer needs to be “yes.”
